Companies that hire people with disabilities honored

A consortium of agencies that find employment for people with disabilities paused from their efforts Thursday morning to honor nearly 20 companies in Greater Lafayette and the surrounding area that hire their clients. October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and four organizations presented awards to businesses during a breakfast meeting at Ivy Tech Community College in Lafayette. "We can't be effective without partnerships with private providers and local units of government," said Fred Williams, supervisor of Area 4 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Division of the Indiana Rehablitation Service. "What we see before us is a wonderful opportunity to continuing ... to get people with disabilities into good-paying jobs. "You're not taking on problems. You're taking on workers who are going to be the equivalent of those without disabilities." R.R....

Deal will provide 1,900 affordable homes

An additional 1,900 affordable housing spaces will be created in 21 Ontario communities under a federal-provincial funding deal announced Friday. The federal government is contributing $45.6 million toward the program and the Ontario government's share is $43.6 million. The housing developments will include a 300-unit project to be built in downtown Toronto for low-income families and people with mental illness. The funding will also provide Kingston with a 49-unit project for seniors, women who are victims of domestic violence, the mentally ill and people with disabilities. The program will help to produce housing spaces for those most in need, said Peter Friedmann, general manager for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation in Ontario....

Civil Rights Division Commemorates Anniversary of the Americans With Disabilities Act

Today, the Department of Justice celebrates the 16th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a historic piece of legislation that was signed into law by President George H. W. Bush on July 26, 1990. The ADA provides a clear and comprehensive national mandate for the elimination of discrimination against individuals with disabilities and has had great success in expanding opportunity for citizens with disabilities. By reducing barriers and opening doors, the ADA has increased participation in community life. Throughout the administration, the Civil Rights Division has made the vigorous enforcement of the ADA a major priority and has continued to make strides to ensure implementation of and compliance with the ADA in all 50 states. The Justice Department has shown its continued commitment to Project Civic Access, a nationwide initiative to enhance access to community facilities by working with cities, towns, villages and counties....
