Police said the assault occurred in a carpark at the corner of Ruthven and Joseph streets at 2.45 (AEST) on Sunday before a passerby came to the woman's assistance and chased the alleged assailant away. The accused reportedly threatened to eliminate some Dalit families for highlighting the issue and demanding police action.It was only after the rape victims met Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the police slapped a case of rape against the accused early this week - 15 days after the incident.They were assaulted and raped on Aug 6 night as punishment by upper caste men because of their refusal to vote one woman candidate - Pinki Devi, the wife of an upper caste landowner, now the village body head in the panchayat elections in June."Except for a few old people, dalit youths and men fled the village fearing threat to their lives after the victims dared to highlight their plight and sought justice," a close relative of one of the rape victims said here Saturday.Although a police team was deployed in the village, it could hardly instil confidence among Dalits.... | |

A year ago, the UW-Madison senior reported that she had been sexually assaulted 15 months earlier by two men while she was drunk. The District Attorney's Office has declined to prosecute. The Dean's Office closed the case without imposing any sanctions on the one suspect who was still enrolled at the university last semester. Dunn's ordeal was documented in The Capital Times on May 6. She is now working with the Roosevelt Institution, a Stanford University-based student think tank with university chapters nationwide. Heading into her senior year, the aspiring lawyer plans to work with the Dean's Office in an effort to develop progressive, victim-friendly ways to handle sexual assaults.... | |
