During his freshman year in college, Jeremy Chien once ate 50 Hooters hot wings in one sitting. They were pretty big, too, said Chien, now 26 years old and 82 pounds lighter. So how did he do it? Chien got a little help from an unlikely source ? his father. I guess I started to get pretty big when I was about 9, when we moved to California, said Chien, who was born and raised in Illinois. The food here is so good ? and the Chinese food is so much better, as my parents used to say. And so Chiens weight battle began, with what he describes as a yearly 10-pound weight gain. Three projects in 2005 -- all dealing with affordable housing -- set the bank apart from the others, said John Bendel, director of community investment for FHL. FHL honors just four of 340 banks in Pennsylvania, Delaware and West Virginia annually for leadership and civic commitment, Bendel said. "Homes become affordable, businesses create jobs, neighborhoods gain new vitality and families prosper thanks to these very special banks," he said. FHL, which is part of the Federal Home Loan Bank System, is cooperatively owned by those 340 financial institutions, he said.... | |
