aging research

'When I was a kid, we had to search the Internet uphill - both ways!'

Does surfing the Web exhaust - and even exasperate - older people? The backers of Cranky.com are betting on it. Cranky is a specialty search engine designed to please aging baby boomers by processing every request from the perspective of someone who is at least 50 years old. "Our research found that people 50 and over are confused about searching on the Web," said Jeff Taylor, the Cranky mastermind who previously struck it rich as the founder of online employment site Monster.com. "It's hard for them to under- stand all the results." Cranky is trying to simplify things by showing just four Web sites in the nonadvertising section of each results page and making the sparser listings more relevant to its target audience. After teaming up with Internet research firm Compete Inc. to identify the 500,000 most popular Web sites among people at least 45 years old, Cranky dispatched reviewers to dig even deeper into the top 5,000 destinations....

Aging McMicken Dam regarded as threat

The Maricopa County Flood Control District is preparing to upgrade the aging McMicken Dam in Surprise, a structure protecting Luke Air Force Base and thousands of private homes on low-elevation land in the West Valley. The dam, made mostly of dirt and rock, prevents runoff from heavy rains and springs from flash-flooding West Valley cities. Without the dam, two to three inches of rain could put Luke and nearby homes under two to three feet of water, said Kelli Sertich, a manager for the Flood Control District. ....

(NewsTarget) By analyzing blood pressure, body mass index, cholesterol levels, gender, level of exercise, genetic factors, age and education, scientists say they have created a test to determine the chances of a person developing dementia in middle age. "The idea is to have a simple tool to predict the risk for diseases, like you have for cardiovascular diseases or diabetes," said lead researcher Miia Kivipelto, from the Aging Research Center, Karolinska Institute in Sweden. "But for dementia there has been nothing like this. The idea to put this information together and have an overall estimation for dementia risk is new." Scientists used data from the Cardiovascular Risk Factors, Aging and Dementia study, which looked at nearly 1,500 middle-aged people from Finland, and then 20 years later reassessed them for signs of dementia....

Boffins create an anti-aging skin cream
Posted Friday, July 07, 2006 10:56:30 PM by Blog57 Team
Washington: Boffins have created a new anti-aging skin cream using compounds known to interfere with the density of filamentous fibers called f-actin, that is a major source of the increasing skin rigidity as people grow older, thus helping skin become softer and look younger. The cream has been created by a team led by Igor Sokolov, a Physics professor at Clarkson University, together with Craig D. Woodworth, Clarkson professor of Biology. As a part of the research, Sokolov used both atomic force and immunoflouresence microscopy to compare young and old epithelial skin cells. "Elasticity of these cells is important. In addition to cosmetic benefits, elastic epithelial cells help maintain the skin's integrity and facilitate healing after an injury," remarks Sokolov. Sokolov then, using the Internet to research the process for making homemade emollients, concocted a skin cream containing compounds known to interfere with f-actin polymerization....
