This day, the group was heading from Wilmington to Myrtle Beach. But before Callanan could even unmount his bicycle from the group's trailer in front of Bike Cycles in Mayfaire, he was receiving fanfare from more than a dozen Cape Fear cyclists. A bike trip from Canada to Key West, Florida is an extraordinary feat by any measure. But it is especially remarkable for Callanan. The Vermont native suffers from cystic fibrosis, a genetic disorder that affects the patient's lungs and digestive system. "I have CF. I was born with it and diagnosed at birth," said Callanan. "Just this year, I turned 30 years old. That's above the life expectancy which is currently 28." In a way, Callanan has beaten the odds for years.... | |

They have discovered that a protein which regulates fat levels is defective in people affected by the life-threatening lung condition, who are characteristically very thin. They also discovered links between the defective protein and people suffering from cancer and diabetes – diseases which cystic fibrosis sufferers often develop. It is now hoped treatments can be developed which could help cystic fibrosis patients put on weight, and increase their life expectancy and quality of life. Scientists also believe they may be able to help obese people lose weight by examining whether their fat control levels can be altered. Dr Anil Mehta, head of the international research team at Dundee University, likened the breakthrough to "finding the Holy Grail".... | |
