Deafness isnt a disability for UWO student

Carrie Caldwell sits behind a drum on the deck of a twenty-person dragon boat as it makes its way toward the starting line of the first annual dragon boat race on the Fox River. Caldwell, 31, is the boats drummer. Its her duty to drum a beat that will act as an auditory command that tells her team when and how fast to paddle. The faster she beats her drum, the faster her team paddles. The pre-race jitters arent affecting hershe doesnt have time. Instead, she intently focuses her eyes toward shore where an interpreter stands ready to give the signal. While she is the boats drummer, Caldwell cant hear a thing. The starting horn blows and the boats paddle neck-and-neck through the choppy waters. Caldwell bangs her drum every time a lead rower dips his paddle into the water....

Now the 17-year-old Dundas resident and Highland graduate is operating his own window washing business with the help of a special Ontario government entrepreneur program, as he prepares to study industrial engineering and business management at the University of Toronto. Hard work is nothing new for Taylor, who held a ski technician position at McMaster Sports. "I think that the window company is my sixth job since I was 15," he stated in an e-mail. And while studying at Pleasant Valley, Dundas District and Highland schools, regularly earning honors standing, Taylor also found time to volunteer with deaf children and participate in a wide variety of sports. He's played with the Dundas Minor Hockey Association since he was four, and has also played soccer, baseball, basketball and pick-up football with friends....

Dear Dr. Gott: I am a 55-year-old male, healthy in all respects except for the following. I take daily: doxazosin/4 milligrams as a preventive medication for prostate enlargement and acyclovir/400 milligrams for genital herpes. My medical history includes two unsuccessful stapedectomy surgeries, both on the right ear, resulting in a "dead" ear. A third surgery on the right ear indicated nothing further could be done for that ear. I have approximately 40 percent hearing in my left ear and wear a hearing aid.
