Today the National Renal Administrators Association (NRAA) recognized Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) for his leadership and continued support of quality kidney care from the nation's representative organization for administrators of America's dialysis centers. Approximately 400,000 Americans currently suffer from kidney failure and of those, around 300,000 require dialysis several times a week, for an average of 3.5 hours per session. According to the National Kidney Foundation, in the state of Pennsylvania, approximately 13,044 residents suffer from kidney failure and require dialysis three times a week to stay alive. Almost 70 percent of these patients suffer from diabetes and/or hypertension, leading causes of kidney failure in the United States. "I am honored to receive this award from an organization that represents the skilled medical professionals who provide quality dialysis care in this country, care that literally saves hundreds of thousands of lives," said Santorum....

LONDON (SHARECAST) - Specialist healthcare group Ark Therapeutics extended recent gains as it announced positive results from a phase II trial of its gene therapy product Trinam. Trinam aims to prevent blood vessels blocking in kidney dialysis patients who have undergone vascular access graft surgery. The new data shows that the access grafts of low dose patients remain functional for dialysis on average over five times longer (17.8 months) than control patients in the trial (3.3 months). For the primary end point of safety, no systemic distribution of Trinam has been found in either of the high or low dose groups and the product is well tolerated. Chief executive Nigel Parker said, The results of this study so far have exceeded the company's expectations in this very serious condition and confirm our original enthusiasm for the product's potential....

Once-monthly erythropoietin effective in dialysis patients: Roche

Clinical studies show that dialysis patients treated with short-acting and frequently administered epoetin anti-anaemia drugs can be directly switched to a once-monthly treatment resulting in stable haemoglobin (Hb) levels. This new drug in development is Mircera Roche's continuous erythropoietin receptor activator (CERA) and the once-monthly dosing approach - never before studied in this way - is a milestone in anaemia management, a Roche release stated. Dialysis patients can receive existing anti-anaemia treatments as frequently as several times a week, depending on the drug and patient status. Roche's once-monthly CERA could have a positive impact on the management of anaemia in dialysis patients by reducing work loads and offering greater efficiencies. The results of three phase III 'maintenance' studies - part of the largest clinical development program ever undertaken for a drug treating renal anaemia - were presented at the annual meeting of the European Renal Association - European Dialysis and Transplant Association (ERA-EDTA) in Glasgow, Scotland....
