A doctor with offices in Erie and Niagara counties who specializes in pediatric endocrinology was charged Tuesday with sexually abusing a 15-year-old boy in his Niagara Falls office. Dr. David C. Plache, 49, of Auburn Avenue, Buffalo, was charged with eight counts of sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child, Niagara Falls police said. The teenager has accused the doctor of improperly touching him in the genital area eight separate times during the last year, said Capt. Ernest C. Palmer, chief of detectives for the Niagara Falls police. "The boy was one of [Plache's] patients," Palmer said. "There were many meetings after hours and on weekends, and we believe some occurred in his office. Complaints from the boy's aunt and mother led to a two-week investigation and to Plache's arrest, Palmer said....

Diamyd Medical announces that its lead drug candidate, Diamyd(TM), has demonstrated overall statistically significant efficacy in preserving insulin production in a Phase II clinical trial in 70 children and adolescents with Type 1 diabetes. No serious adverse events associated with the therapy were observed. The Principal Investigator found that the treatment is easy to give and that the study outcomes are of clinical importance for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes. The results from the Diamyd(TM) study demonstrate that the group of 35 recently diagnosed Type 1 diabetes patients that received Diamyd(TM) produced approximately twice as much meal stimulated insulin (as measured by C-peptide) 15 months after the first treatment as compared to the placebo group (p ~ 0.01). Preserving insulin-production is crucial for delaying the complications associated with long-term diabetes which cost billions of dollars to treat....

The bark of the white birch tree contains a compound that might help fight prostate cancerprostate cancer. That's the early word based on research in mice. The compound, called betulinol, hasn't been tested on people. Preliminary tests show that betulonic acid, made from betulinol, may discourage human prostate cancercancer cells from dividing, and spur those cells to die. Brij Saxena, PhD, who works in reproductive endocrinology at Cornell University's Weill Medical College, and colleagues, conducted the tests. In a lab, the researchers exposed isolated human prostate cancer cells to betulonic acid for up to three days. For comparison, they also grew prostate cancer cells not exposed to the compound. Three days later, all the prostate cancers had grown....
