A motorcyclist who suffered facial and head injuries Wednesday morning in a collision near Monterey and Tennessee streets was taken by air ambulance to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. A spokeswoman at the hospital said later that Amos Smith of Vallejo was treated and released. Vallejo Police Cpl. Harry Bennigson said the unidentified driver of a Chrysler convertible, who apparently turned left from Monterey onto Tennessee, in front of Smith, will be cited for failing to yield the right of way. "He had the right of way," said Mary Gayer of the motorcyclist. After the collision, she said, she saw the black-and-chrome Harley-Davidson spin around and skid on its side. The rider came off the bike and "he went spinning around a little," and when he stopped his head nearly struck a light pole....

Head injuries decreasing, thanks to helmets

When Margaret Keresteci's 19-year-old daughter went horseback riding in Ottawa last weekend, she was taken aback when asked to wear a protective helmet while on her trail ride -- it's not the law, and she had never been asked to sport one in the past. But small moves such as this one are responsible for the significant decline the Canadian Institute for Health Information has charted in the number of people admitted to hospital for traumatic head injuries during the past decade, it says. "To me, it spoke to the fact that people are thinking more consciously about prevention," said Ms. Keresteci, the lead investigator of CIHI's analysis. "We're seeing similar preventative measures in snowboarding, skiing, rock climbing -- the activities these kids are involved in." In 2004, 16,811 people were admitted to hospitals for head injuries, down almost 35 per cent from 25,665 in 1995....

For the past 20 years, Beth Adams has been an advocate of precautions to prevent brain injuries at all levels of sports, from youth all the way up to the professionals. A nationally recognized neurotrauma rehabilitation specialist from Swampscott, Adams travels around the country speaking at seminars and constantly stressing safety on the playing fields. "I'm never bored - because there is always something new in my practice," said Adams, the mother of 9-year-old Jacob and 12-year-old Alexandra, both of whom play sports. "For years, I treated people that had been in car accidents. But once I started dealing with head injuries that occurred in sports, I found out there were so many layers involved. You have the advocate for the player - either coach or agent urging a return to the playing field - as well as the injured person, and the family needing information....

Head injuries spike without Pa. helmet law

HARRISBURG - Pennsylvania motorcyclists have suffered severe head injuries at a dramatically increased clip since the state's helmet law was repealed in 2003. In the last two years, nearly twice as many riders have landed in trauma centers with major head injuries than in the two years preceding the repeal, according to a legislative report released yesterday. Even when adjusted for a spike in motorcycle registrations since 2001, the rate of major head injuries still went up by 55 percent. And most of those head-injured riders - 62 percent - were riding without helmets, the study reported. "It's time to stop the body count," said Alex Rosenau, president of the Pennsylvania chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians. "It's time to reduce the suffering of the families....
