| Uganda: Poorly Equipped Surgeons Saving Life At Uganda Heart Institute | | Posted Monday, October 16, 2006 7:00:16 PM by Blog57 Team | | My heart skipped a beat when I was told Ms. Nakayima Graida, a 54-year-old woman had had her "stomach pushed to her throat" after a life threatening cancer. Nakayima had to withstand an eight-hour operation to correct a case of cancer of the oesophagus (throat). Now she has a 60% chance of survival in the next five years. While on our (media and medical officers) way to see Nakayima, we were told that no shoes are allowed about four metres to the entrance of the intensive care unit (ICU) at the Uganda Heart Institute (UHI) in Mulago hospital, Kampala. This is to safeguard the newly operated patients from possible infections as they have open and fresh wounds. That is how delicate the institute and matters to do with the heart are. Officials at the Institute say UHI has the most skilled medical personnel in East and Central Africa.... | |

A team of veterinary specialists from Alabama tried to implant a sophisticated cardiac device in his chest to synchronize his heart rhythm. The gorilla, 23-year-old Kuja, arrived at the zoo in 1985, over the last decade fathered two other males in the zoo's collection. The chief veterinarian of the Smithsonian Institution's National Zoo -- Doctor Suzan Murray -- says Kuja went into heart failure and doctors do not yet know the cause of that. While the animal's heart function was normal for his age during a routine physical conducted March 31st, members of the zoo staff reported lethargy and a loss of appetite earlier this month. A June 20th ultrasound examination indicated that Kuja's heart muscle was unable to contract normally, and his heart's pumping capacity had diminished.... | |
