Few have even heard of it. Yet it affects over 1% of the people in the United States. It causes considerable pain, disfigurement, and is often disabling. It is Hidradenitis Suppurativa, or HS. In 2005, a San Diego resident and patient with HS, Michelle Barlow, co- founded the Hidradenitis Suppurativa Foundation to help discover the cause of this disease and find better treatments for patients. To bring together a community of physicians and researchers that were dedicated to HS, the HSF organized "Directions 2006," the First International Hidradenitis Suppurativa Research Symposium.
