If you consume a lot of white bread, then you apparently have greater chances of developing the most common form of kidney cancer, renal cell carcinoma, an Italian study revealed. The study indicated that those who ate a lot of bread double their chances of getting kidney cancer than those who consume lesser amounts of white bread. The study analyzed the data, collected from more than 2300 Italians, of which 767 participants were suffering from renal cell carcinoma and 1,534 were normal healthy people belonging to similar age group, gender and location; based on factors such as lifestyle, diet, and personal and family medical history. ....

Mr. Dalmath, an avid sportsman, community servant and fixture of the WHEC-TV (Channel 10) newscast for almost 30 years, died Friday at Strong Memorial Hospital of kidney cancer. He was 60. "He did everything the right way," said Rich Funke, a friend and colleague who met Mr. Dalmath at Long Island's WGBB radio station in 1971. Five years later, the two began their careers in Rochester. "I was the sports guy and he was the news guy," said Funke. Mr. Dalmath anchored the 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts for 25 years, the longest tenure in station history. He hosted the Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon for 23 years. But for all the time he spent on camera, "he was kind of shy in public when people noticed who he was," said Brown. "The world knew him here in Rochester." He was born Gabor Dalmath in Budapest, Hungary, at a tumultuous time in that nation's history....

LAST YEAR, some 7.6 million people worldwide died of cancer and the World Health Organization estimates that in the next 10 years another 84 million more will die if action is not taken. Because cancer is the second most common noninfectious and nontraumatic cause of death here and around the world, an improved diagnosis for any type of cancer becomes critical for assuring that the right treatment is selected, said University of Santo Tomas Hospital president and CEO Cenon Alfonso during the opening of the hospitals Benavides Cancer Institute....

A hospital in Montreal is one of the few places in the world offering an experimental treatment for kidney cancer, attracting a young woman from Egypt. Hagar Salama, 22, was very ill when she arrived in Montreal last September. Salama was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma, or kidney cancer, in Cairo 18 months ago, but the standard therapy of interferon, an immune booster, didn't work. Her only option was an experimental drug called Sutent, which was approved for stomach cancer but not for kidney cancer. The drug attacks tumours by limiting their growth and choking off the blood vessels that feed them. At the time, the only place to get the treatment was at a clinical trial at Notre Dame Hospital in Montreal....
