| | | Shire's Dynepo Controls Anemia In Kidney Disease Patients | | Posted Sunday, September 17, 2006 1:01:13 PM by Blog57 Team | | LONDON -(Dow Jones)- The first anti-anemia treatment produced in a human cell line, Shire's Dynepo, can effectively control anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease, according to two Phase III studies presented for the first time Thursday. Patients with kidney disease as a result of diabetes (diabetic nephropathy) were amongst the population effectively treated with this new treatment. The data were presented Thursday at the 42nd Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD). Dynepo is the first erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) to be produced by gene-activation technology in a human cell line and accordingly differs from all other available ESAs, which are all recombinant proteins produced in Chinese Hamster Ovary cells. The two large-scale Phase III studies have shown that treatment with Dynepo can effectively maintain hemoglobin at target levels over a long period of time (up to 52 weeks) when administered by either intravenous or subcutaneous administration, with the data demonstrating overall efficacy when DYNEPO was used in various types of patients with anemia associated with CKD - whether they require dialysis or not.... | |

| | | New research identifies diabetes-kidney disease link | | Posted Saturday, August 12, 2006 11:08:54 PM by Blog57 Team | | New Australian research has found that one-in-two patients with type 2 diabetes are also suffering chronic kidney disease. Doctors say the figures are much higher than doctors expected. The study was done by the Baker Heart Research Institute and blood samples were taken from almost 4,000 diabetes patients. Dr Merlin Thomas says most of the patients were aged in their mid 60s, and many did not know that their kidneys were being damaged. "A lot of GPs in the study were surprised that many of their patients who they thought were relatively well in fact had chronic kidney disease," Dr Thomas said. .... | |

| | | Alonzo Mourning Plays Offense Against Kidney Disease | | Posted Tuesday, July 11, 2006 5:00:42 PM by Blog57 Team | | FRIDAY, July 7 (HealthDay News) -- It happened right after his return home with a basketball gold medal from the 2000 Sydney Olympics, just in time for the birth of his daughter, Myka. "I was on top of the world," said 36-year-old Miami Heat center Alonzo Mourning. "At the age of 30, I felt invincible." But even a seven-time National Basketball Association All-Star was no match for kidney failure brought on, in Mourning's case, by an acute inflammatory illness called focal glomerulosclerosis. "I'm lucky, because a routine pre-season physical detected that I had a chronic kidney disorder," the 6-foot, 10-inch, 261-pound Mourning said in an interview in New York City on Thursday. "Otherwise, I wouldn't have known till later, and it would've been too late." Early detection of his condition meant Mourning got a "free-throw" of sorts on the disease, allowing him to get into treatment before he required dialysis.... | |
