Senior left guard Roman Fry sustained an undisclosed knee injury on the game's third play and did not return. Senior tight end Thomas Hunter suffered a shoulder injury and missed most of the second half. The extent of both injuries is not known, although Fry was on crutches in the second half and had a large brace on his knee. Sound off from Clemson-Georgia Tech OH, OREGON, YOU HAVE COMPANY As if it wasn't bad enough that Clemson warmed up in orange jerseys and purple pants, the Tigers switched to purple on purple for the game. Oregon no longer has the ugliest uniforms in the land. WE KNOW WHICH LOOK HEIDI KLUM WOULD LIKE The grape uniforms provided quite a contrast with Georgia Tech's classy gold-and-white duds. JUST HOW BIG ARE THE CLOSETS OF THESE GUYS In these belt-tightening times for athletic departments, how much economic sense does it make to have yet another set of jerseys? IMAGINE THE CHEER FOR A SPECIAL TEAMS TACKLE Best cheer of the evening was the mock one intended for Clemson kicker Jad Dean, who booted his second-quarter kickoff out of the end zone, thus preventing a Georgia Tech runback....

Eagles will sink or swim in the depth of roster

The roll call didn't start when the Eagles lost Lito Sheppard three plays into their season opener with an ankle injury, and it won't end there. It never does. Guys always get hurt, always miss time. Somebody once said that durability is more important than ability in the NFL, and that's dead on. In no other sport is health such a big factor in a team's success. Before Sheppard went down, the Birds put four guys on the injured reserve list, saw two of their defensive linemen slowed by rib injuries, got a scare about William/Tra Thomas' back, etc., etc. And last week's injury report included two of the team's bigger names -- Brian Westbrook and Jeremiah Trotter. So the question is, do the Birds have enough quality depth to compensate for the inevitable? And the answer is, who knows? It's a wait-and-see proposition, particularly at running back, linebacker and along the offensive line....

CORAL GABLES Glenn Cook, Miami's expected starter at middle linebacker, will be out two to four weeks due to a knee injury, Coach Larry Coker said. The junior could miss the season opener Sept. 4 against Florida State. "I am not going to say at all until I see how it progresses," Coker said when asked if Cook would play in the game. Cook will have arthroscopic surgery, while redshirt freshman Darryl Sharpton has an opportunity to earn the starting position. Sharpton he played in three games last season before knee and ankle injuries sidelined him for the rest of the season. "[Sharpton] is a very physical player with great speed," Coker said. "He just needs to get honed in on his assignments better and when he does that he can be special." With Sharpton in the middle on the first unit, he is joined by weakside linebacker Jon Beason and Tavares Gooden as the strongside linebacker....

How do Hawks end the injuries?

She is devastated and perplexed by a rash of ACL knee injuries that have plagued the Iowa women's basketball team over the past year. She also is determined to do something about it. "We're definitely evaluating our training," said Bluder, who is entering her seventh season as the Iowa coach. "We're going to look at our rehab and we're going to look at our strength training. "We have to do that." Forward Johanna Solverson was the latest player to succumb to a knee injury. She suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee June 22 while playing in the Game Time League. Solverson was trying to make a comeback after suffering the same injury to the same knee last summer. She missed all of last season and she could miss all of the upcoming season as a fifth-year senior....
