Recently, Byrd Regional Hospital experienced quite the technological upgrade when new equipment was added that will aide in the performance of orthopedic knee surgeries.Steve Mahoney, a representative of DePuy Orthopedics, explained how this new computer equipment would work.“Basically, there is an infrared camera in the room that is sort of like the GPS satellite system in your car," Mahoney said. “The infrared sensors establish landmarks on the leg using reflective spheres. The main point is that this device is designed to give the doctor real-time information prior to making any resections." ....

August 21, 2006 - A 100-year-old Denver woman was walking again the same day after total knee replacement surgery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) this week. Thelma Vette said she traveled the 800 miles to UAMS because of the reputation of knee and hip replacement joint specialist Richard Evans, M.D., who had a private practice in Denver until 2005. ....

Mangalore: Knee replacement surgery offered at reduced cost

MANGALORE: The A.J. Hospital and Research Centre here has extended its offer of doing knee replacement surgeries at reduced cost, up to September 2006, according to Prashanth Marla, Medical Director of the hospital. He said in a release that the hospital did 23 knee replacement surgeries and 78 orthroscopic reconstructive surgeries at reduced cost in the past two months. Dr. Marla said many people suffered from arthritis and wearing out of knee joints. The worn out joints required total knee replacement. These surgeries were expensive and people fear about the complications. Keyhole surgery of the knee joint (arthroscopy) was performed for ligament injuries of the knee. These injuries occurred as a result of sports injuries or trauma. The doctors at the hospital recently performed a surgery on Dinesh (46) from Mysore who was suffering from rheumatoid arthritis of both the knees....
