Posted Tuesday, October 24, 2006 6:58:45 AM by Blog57 Team
A new consortium study found higher rates of chronic drug-induced liver injury (DILI) resulting from the common prescription medications known as antimicrobials and anticonvulsants. A surprising 23 percent of patients showed evidence of a chronic condition six months after their enrollment in a new study measuring DILI. ....

Anti-inflammatory Drug Delays Liver Cancer

(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Liver cancer is the fifth leading cancer in the world and causes more than 1 million deaths each year. New research reveals how a common treatment for gout is being used to delay and possibly prevent this often deadly liver cancer. The primary risk factors for liver cancer are hepatitis viruses B and C, metabolic diseases, and cirrhosis. All of these conditions cause inflammation, which can damage the liver. Colchicine, an anti-inflammatory most often used to treat gout and psoriasis, prevented liver cancer in patients with hepatitis virus-related end-stage liver disease, report researchers from the Instituto Nacional de Cancerologia in Mexico City. A three-year study revealed patients treated with colchicine were less likely to be diagnosed with liver cancer than those who did not receive the treatment....

KAHULUI -- A new liver for Stanley Kakioka has meant a new lease on life, and now, a new family on Maui. Kakioka met his ?second family? Saturday in a first-time meeting filled with tears, hugs and smiles. The 51-year-old Kaimuki man flew in from Oahu to meet the relatives of the late Jesse Garcia, a 24-year-old Kahului man whose organs were donated after his motorcycle collided with a car on Oct. 28 at the intersection of Kanaloa Avenue and Kahului Beach Road. Garcia’s mother, Nona, wept as she exchanged lei and accepted a hug from Kakioka, the recipient of her son’s liver. ?I’m glad I finally got to meet you,? she said after a long silence of smiles and tears. Kakioka nodded, ?Me too.? The Garcia family – Nona, Jesse’s fraternal twin brother, Jake, and their father, Jose Garcia of the Big Island – welcomed Kakioka to Nona’s home in Kahului on Saturday....

New Clues For Treatment Of Liver Cancer
Posted Thursday, July 13, 2006 9:18:09 AM by Blog57 Team
By generating tumors in laboratory mice that mimic human liver cancer and by comparing the DNA of mouse and human tumors, researchers at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory have identified two genes that are likely to play a role in the third leading cause of human cancer deaths. The study also establishes an efficient and adaptable method for exploring the biology of liver cancer, for validating potential therapeutic targets, and for testing new treatments. The findings are reported in tomorrow's issue of the journal Cell (June 30). "There has been a long search for animal models that could be predictive of the genes involved in human cancers. These researchers have taken a large step forward in this search and are on a clear path to proving that well-designed animal models can precisely reflect the events observed in human cancers," said Arnold J....
