Diabetes Associated with Higher Cancer Risk

CHICAGO SEP 26, 2006 (Reuters) - A large study of Japanese adults found those with diabetes were more likely to develop cancer, especially of certain organs such as the pancreas and liver, researchers said on Monday. Men with diabetes in the study of nearly 98,000 people were 27 percent more likely than non-diabetics to be diagnosed with cancer, the study by the National Cancer Center in Tokyo found. Women afflicted with diabetes were also more at risk for cancer, though the association was not as clear as with men. Study author Manami Inoue wrote in this month's Archives of Internal Medicine that researchers have suspected a link between the two diseases but have not had conclusive evidence. One theory holds that adult-onset diabetes produces excess insulin that may promote cancer cell growth in the liver or pancreas....

Updated HIV Treatment Guidelines Now Include Three GSK HIV Medications for Initial Antiretroviral Treatment Regimens

TORONTO, Aug. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Updated treatment guidelines issued today by the International AIDS Society-USA (IAS-USA) now include three GlaxoSmithKline HIV medications as part of their recommendations for initial antiretroviral therapy. These guidelines were presented today at the International AIDS Conference (IAC) in Toronto, Canada. In the guidelines, EPZICOM(TM) (abacavir sulfate and lamivudine) and COMBIVIR(R) (lamivudine and zidovudine) are both recommended nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, and LEXIVA(R) (fosamprenavir calcium) boosted with ritonavir is now listed among the recommended options for protease inhibitor-based regimens in the initial treatment of adults with HIV infection. Additional information in the guidelines recommends the use of EPZICOM as an initial NRTI backbone....
