Eli Lilly has launched a major clinical trial evaluating Alimta as a treatment for extensive-stage small cell lung cancer. The trial is expected to be the largest ever to be conducted in small cell lung cancer and will assess the potential clinical benefit of Alimta in combination with carboplatin, a commonly-used chemotherapeutic agent. This treatment will be compared directly to the current leading treatment option of etoposide in combination with carboplatin. ....

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Ivanhoe Broadcast News) -- Each year, 170,000 Americans are diagnosed with lung cancer. Surgery to remove a lung tumor can be tough on patients and require them to stay in the hospital for up to a week. Now, a new surgery offers lung cancer patients a less painful recovery with the same success as the old procedure. Walter Brossok, an ex-lung cancer patient, has 83 years worth of memories to tell his granddaughter about and is thankful he's alive to do it. A few months ago doctors told him he had lung cancer, but he was determined to beat it. "So, I have lung cancer. I'm going to get rid of it as soon as I can," he says. A new test has the potential to save the lives of thousands of lung cancer patients each year. That's according to scientists at Duke University Medical Center who developed a genomic test that could help guide doctors in their treatment decisions. Leanne Gregg has the details. US Women Uninformed About Lung Cancer

MONDAY, July 10 (HealthDay News) -- A new survey finds that American women are greatly uninformed about the threats posed by lung cancer and how it can affect them. Published by the U.S. National Lung Cancer Partnership, the 2006 survey of more than 500 women not only lists the statistical realities of lung cancer in this country -- it also reveals a widespread lack of awareness by millions. "This survey is a current snapshot of women's attitudes and beliefs about lung cancer, and it's frightening -- especially considering the extensive media coverage on the topic after Peter Jennings' and Dana Reeve's deaths. Women need to know the truth about lung cancer," Regina Vidaver, executive director of the National Lung Cancer Partnership (NLCP), said in a prepared statement....
