Knights, Liekhus shake off nerves

Fremont Bergan junior Brian Liekhus made sure his first playoff start was one he wouldn't soon forget. The outside linebacker and quarterback turned in football's version of the trifecta as he lead Bergan to a 31-15 win over Wilber-Clatonia Thursday at Memorial Field.Liekhus was involved in touchdown plays on offense, defense and special teams. He ran back an interception, threw a touchdown pass and blocked a punt that was returned by teammate Jordan Mruz for a score."It was my first start in a playoff game so I was a little nervous in the first half," Liekhus admitted. "After a while I started to realize it's just another game. We all calmed down and played our game."According Bergan coach Ron Beacom, Liekhus is continuing to develop as a team leader late in the season."Even though we're in the first week of the playoffs, he's only in his fourth week of being our starting quarterback and starting outside linebacker," Beacom said....

Fill-in Polk doesn't let nerves slow him

CORVALLIS -- Oregon State's Clinton Polk knew there was a good chance he'd start at tailback against USC on Saturday, but he said he didn't get the definitive word until about three hours before kickoff. Teammate Yvenson Bernard told him around 9 a.m. that he couldn't play because of a sprained right ankle and that it was Polk's job to carry the Beavers' running game. Polk responded with 100 yards rushing on 22 carries, plus 16 yards on three receptions, helping the Beavers to an improbable 33-31 victory over the No. 3 Trojans at Reser Stadium. "I'm really proud of Clinton," Beavers coach Mike Riley said. "It was a big game for him, and big for what he did." Polk, who transferred to Oregon State after playing last season at Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College, had spent the week practicing with the first-team offense after Bernard was injured in last week's 17-10 victory at Arizona....

They're young, but not Young

AUSTIN -- Wherever the Longhorns played last season -- The Horseshoe, College Station and for a national championship at the Rose Bowl -- redshirt freshman quarterback Colt McCoy soaked in every last detail. How fans jeered. How nerves became frayed. How Vince Young handled this tension. "I had a feeling, 'If Vince leaves, this is going to be me,'" McCoy said. "'This is what I am going to experience. This is what is going to happen the next four years when I take over.'" He said so matter of factly. And a little later, while talking about possibly replacing Young, he used that same casual tone to add: "Hopefully, I'll have as much success here as he did." And therein lies the beauty of youth. It doesn't know to be scared. And this is an introduction to them. In their own words. Colt McCoy Jevan Snead ....

War of nerves at CAB polls
Posted Friday, July 28, 2006 1:01:09 PM by Blog57 Team
The Cricket Association of Bengal elections on July 30 has become as high-voltage as a state assembly election with everyone from the Chief Minister to the smallest local cricket club in town on the edge of their seats. The voters list is out and the countdown to a nail-biting finish to the CAB polls has begun. Of the 121 voters, two have been struck off the voters list, both from clubs apparently opposed to CAB president Jagmohan Dalmiya. Dalmiya's rival Kolkata police commissioner Prasun Mukherjee, however, seems unnerved about that development. "I won't speak of numbers but I am confident of winning," he said. With so much depending on the Sunday polls, Dalmiya's nerves must be in pieces but he is all stiff upper lip. "Today is no different....

MUMBAI: In the wake of Tuesday's tragedy, railways and police are struggling to deal with a spate of hoax calls that are causing breakdowns and spreading panic. In the last two days alone, Mumbai police has received at least six prank calls, including one which warned of a bomb at Vile Parle station and resulted in trains being halted for over 45 minutes. The calls were all made from PCO booths across the city and have not resulted in a single arrest. One of the callers on Sunday warned of a bomb being planted at India Gate in Delhi. The message was immediately relayed to the capital where bomb detection and disposal teams swung into action. But the call turned out to be a hoax. Earlier on Saturday, the calls that came in warned of a bomb at Vile Parle station, another at an SBI ATM centre near IIT Powai, a bomb in a crowded mall (In Orbit) in Malad and an explosive in a BEST bus in Vile Parle....
