More nurses under attack

AGGRESSIVE attacks on nurses rose 30 per cent in the past year, despite an overall drop in patients abusing medical staff. The NT Health Department annual report 2005-06 shows a 32 per cent drop in physical and verbal assaults on administrative and professional health care workers. Yet physical attacks on nurses rose from 110 in 2004-05 to 143 last financial year. And verbal attacks rose 2 per cent. Australian Nursing Federation NT secretary Yvonne Falckh said it was unfortunate that physical and verbal abuse had become part of the job. "Every day nurses are verbally abused -- patients get sick of waiting for a doctor, or they come in and they're affected by alcohol," she said. "You need to look at the causes in order to prevent the violence....

Ghana: Nurses Warn Armed Robbers

Nurses at the Tamale Teaching Hospital have sent strong signals to armed robbers and the police that they would no longer treat any suspected armed robbers who have been battered by the public. A practical manifestation of the nurses' warning occurred last week at the hospital when a number of nurses on duty turned away four battered suspected highway armed robbers who had been sent to the hospital for treatment. Not even the presence of the Northern Regional Police Public relations Officer, Inspector Geoffrey Adu-Amankwa and other policemen could convince the nurses to treat the patients, three of who were pleading profusely. When this reporter queried one of the supposed senior nurses dressed in their white gown, she said "I won't treat these armed robbers, . they have killed my people," and walked away....

Nurses claim $10m wages shortfall

Tasmanian's Health Department has been accused of under-paying nurses on shift work to the tune of about $10 million. The Nurses Federation says it first made the department aware in 2001 that public sector nurses were not being paid their award entitlements for public holidays and annual leave loading. But the union says nothing has been done. It is taking the State Government to the Industrial Commission next month to argue its case for back payments for the six years allowed under the statutes. The federation's acting secretary, Agnes Stanislaus Large, says a minimum of 5,000 nurses are each owed about $2,000. "You know there's a lot of double-dipping from the department in the sense that they're sort of ripping the nurses off on numerous occasions regarding public holidays, and the accrual of the public holiday for annual leave," she said....

Australia on offer to British nurses

A representative of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has said it was sad that qualified nurses were being forced to look further afield for work as they fall victim to the health economy crisis. Karen Webb, director of the eastern region for RCN, added: "Nurses have always worked across the globe and that is no bad thing. But it is very sad when nurses who have spent three years and a great deal of money to get qualified are unable to find work close to home. "The average age of student nurses is about 30 and therefore many of those who qualify are tied to their local area and cannot move away. As a result their only option is to accept bank and auxiliary work or leave the profession. "In a few years' time we will be crying out for nurses but it is not like a supermarket where you can just pick them off the shelf - you can't ask people to make all this sacrifice to train up and then tell them there's no work for them." Increased recruitment of UK nurses by hospitals overseas could also signal a reversal in the trend of foreign nurses coming to work in this country....
