Study finds cause of chronic ear infections

Madison Jeschke was 2 months old when she had her first ear infection. Within five months, she'd been diagnosed with four more. Each time, Madison's pediatrician prescribed antibiotics to kill the bacteria that were causing her discomfort. And each month her mother, Lisa Jeschke, became increasingly frustrated while watching her daughter wince as pain continued to shoot through Madison's ears. "At the third (infection) the doctor wanted to wait to see if she'd have a fourth before trying ear tubes," said Jeschke, 34, who has had three ear infections herself this summer. "But why wait until she goes into pain when we know the treatment isn't working?" Like any parent, Jeschke wanted to do what she thought was best for her child....

A chief engineer of Indian descent has won an $11 million verdict against General Electric Co. after a federal jury found the conglomerate discriminated against and illegally fired him. The six-member jury awarded Hermant K. Moody, 52, of Avon, Conn., $591,423 in back pay and $500,000 in compensatory damages. Jurors then added $10 million in punitive damages against Fairfield, Conn.,-based GE. GE vowed to challenge the verdict. Moody worked in GE's Plainville, Conn., facility, which provided products for industrial electrical installations. He invented products and received eight patents, including one for the magic lighting panel, an energy-saving device used in industry. Moody has been unemployed since he was fired in March 2003. ECONOMY HURT TWICE BY ENERGY PRICES Surging energy prices are acting like a double whammy on the country's economy, crimping growth even as they push up inflation, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke told the House Financial Services Committee....
