An oversized check was presented to Benedict B. Benigno, M.D., founder and CEO of the Ovarian Cancer Institute, by Bethany Diamond, Founder of Ovarian Cycle, to help further pioneering research at the Ovarian Cancer Institute focused on discovering an early detection tool for the disease that claims the lives of more that 13,000 women in the U.S. each year. .... | |

Last month, these Almaden Valley residents made a public show of support by raising money for the American Cancer Society in Barnes' honor. Team Gayle, made up of more than 20 of Barnes' friends and family, raised about $7,000 in Campbell's Relay for Life on July 15 and 16. During the 24-hour relay, a fundraiser to honor loved ones lost to cancer and to celebrate the lives of those who have survived, team members took turns walking or running laps around the track at the Campbell Community Center. Co-captain Dana Dinno says she is proud of Team Gayle's showing, given that the team was formed just five weeks before the relay.... | |

Gemzar is already approved in the United States for lung, pancreatic and breast cancers and is approved outside the United States for ovarian cancer. Lilly said ovarian cancer recurs in 90 percent of women who are diagnosed and treated. The American Cancer Society estimates there will be 20,180 new cases in the United States this year. The FDA approved use of Gemzar in combination with carboplatin, a widely used chemotherapy, for women with advanced ovarian cancer that has relapsed at least six months after initial therapy. About 22,000 American women are diagnosed with the disease and about 16,000 die from it each year, according to the American Cancer Society.... | |
