Josh Davis is excited about this weekend's Short Course Grand Prix at the Palo Alto Natatorium, and he's not even swimming anymore. Davis plans to be in the crowd when four medalists and three world-record holders from the 2004 U.S. Olympic team take part in the first event of the 2006-07 Grand Prix season, today through Sunday. Competition begins each day with preliminaries at 9 a.m. Finals are at 5 p.m. "We're going to see some of the best in the world," said Davis, a two-time Olympian who retired this year. "It'll be a pretty good show." Among those scheduled to compete are the "Texas Trio" of Aaron Peirsol, Brendan Hansen and Ian Crocker, who swam for the University of Texas and still train in Austin. Peirsol, a backstroke specialist, won three gold medals at the Athens Games....

Popular swimming hole closed because of E. coli

GREAT BARRINGTON ? The Board of Health has banned swimming at the popular Green River swimming hole after routine tests turned up unacceptable counts of the E. coli bacteria. Board of Health Agent Mark Pruhenski said that the water is tested weekly during the summer, and that heavy rains in the past week likely contributed to the test results. "We've actually had very low numbers, but we got high numbers this week, so we closed it down to be on the safe side," he said. The state Department of Public Health sets an E. coli contamination measurement at 235 parts per million. However, the town has typically closed the swimming hole if measurements top 100 ppm, Pruhenski said. Last year, the area was closed more often than open, he said. This past week, the level was around 130 or 140 near the Route 23 overpass at the river, west of town, he said....

This becomes Cleveland Heep's burden in M. Night Shyamalan's newest film “Lady in the Water." Since the writer/director's 1999 breakthrough film “The Sixth Sense," Shyamalan has fascinated movie goers with his twisted plots and unpredictable characters. In “Lady in the Water" the audience is once again exposed to Shyamalan's trademark tricks and treats. Life is going swimmingly for apartment superintendent Heep (Paul Giamatti) until he discovers a mythical creature called a narf (Bryce Dallas Howard) hanging out in the apartment complex's swimming pool. The narf (who goes by “Story") tells Heep that she comes from the “Blue World" and needs his help in returning. Sound simple? Hardly. Hiding around the apartment complex are vicious dog-like creatures called scrunts who would enjoy nothing more than sinking their teeth into some narf....

Some Local Rivers Under Swimming Advisory
Posted Sunday, July 02, 2006 7:42:17 AM by Blog57 Team
Swimming advisories that have been in place for several years in different areas of the state will remain in effect until new data can be analyzed. The Division of Water in the Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet and the Division of Public Health Protection and Safety in the Cabinet for Health and Family Services agree that advisories, in place because of high levels of fecal coliform bacteria, should remain in effect. People should avoid swimming and other recreational contact with waters in the areas specified because of the bacteria, which occur in human and animal waste and indicate the presence of untreated or inadequately treated sewage. The bacteria create a potential for diarrheal illnesses and other infectious diseases. "This information is provided to our citizens to help them make informed good public health decisions regarding where they swim....
