Scientists Study Genes, Severe Injuries
Posted Tuesday, November 14, 2006 7:19:18 AM by Blog57 Team
Surviving major trauma _ a car crash, gunshot wounds, burns _ isn't just a matter of fixing the obvious injuries. About a week into the healing, many patients' organs suddenly fail, as doctors watch helplessly. They can't predict who will go into this downward spiral, or how victims will fare. Numerous attempts at treatments have failed. Now a massive federal research program is under way to determine why one patient dies while another with equally severe injuries lives. And the first good clues suggest that traumatic injury can literally change people's genes in a way that makes their immune systems run amok, harming their own organs. If the finding holds up, in gene tests in emergency rooms around the country, it could do more than help doctors tell in advance which of their patients is most likely to live....

Family justice descends into farce

A BLOW-OUT in Family Court delays is increasing the cost and trauma of breaking up, and it now takes more than two years to resolve difficult disputes. Specialist lawyers say there are simply not enough judges to cope with demand, and the court's Chief Justice warns the delays may get worse. Sydney's two family magistrates were appointed earlier this year to take some of the load, but they are so swamped their next available hearings are in April. No new hearings are being listed before judges this year. Ninety per cent of defended cases in the Family Court are supposed to be completed within 11 months, but by the end of the last financial year it was 26.9 months. Les Stubbs, head of family law at Turner Freeman, said cases ready to be heard in April were only now getting a trial....

That's why people in Man have been working for years to open a Level 5 Trauma Center but finding for the project could be in jeopardy. "We've had many ups and downs with this project," said Roger Bryant, Director of the Logan County Ambulance Service. Plans to turn the abandoned Man Hospital into a level five trauma center have been in the works for years. The center would be a place to stabilize critical patients before they were moved to a bigger hospital. The Economic Development Grant Committee allocated some of the funding back in 2003. Thursday, project leaders will have to explain why the plan is taking so long. "The role of the economic development money is absolutely crucial to this project. It is probably a third of the total cost of the project," Bryant said....

Kids + fireworks = danger

M any of us have fond memories of running around on the Fourth of July, sparkler in hand, and most of us were lucky enough to play with fire and not get burned. But, that's not always the case. Every year, thousands of children suffer severe burns and eye trauma due to fireworks-related accidents. Just ask Dr. Joe H. Patton, the director of trauma at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Every year, he treats children injured while playing with fireworks -- injuries, he says, that could have been easily prevented. Patton, of Novi, has three children of his own who aren't allowed to play with fireworks. "Even the simple little fireworks like sparklers that people think are fairly innocuous, aren't," he says. "In general, even with the closest supervision, something can go wrong....
