| Test kits help clarify mysterious fevers | | Posted Sunday, September 03, 2006 11:06:10 PM by Blog57 Team | | When it comes to diagnosis, the term "fever of unknown origin" (FUO) provides both a challenge and headache for a doctor trying to pinpoint just exactly what is wrong with a patient and how to treat it. In practice, the doctor usually narrows down the possible causes of the fever, administers a broad range of drugs and then follows the patient's progress. This broad approach is taken as it would be too expensive and impractical to test a patient for every conceivable cause before administering treatment. The only problem is, sometimes an FUO can turn out to be something more serious than it appears and a wrong diagnosis could lead to a fatal result. But thanks to a new medical test kit developed by a scientist at the Chiang Mai Medical Sciences Centre, doctors can cut the number of patients treated for FUO by about one-third.... | |

| | | Stay tuned for next episode of weather worries | | Posted Wednesday, August 02, 2006 1:08:35 PM by Blog57 Team | | The show was in black and white, which lent it a more ominous tone. I remember a dreary upstairs apartment, window open and fan running, and an oppressive light boring in from outside. The people were wilting from the heat, clothes wet with sweat, disheveled and no doubt more than a bit aromatic. Tension filled the room. The earth's orbit had decayed, and our globe was falling ever closer to the sun. Destruction of everything mankind knew was fast approaching, but for now what the characters in this episode faced was unrelenting heat, which seemed to worsen each day. The argument in the room was about whether or not to join the crowds who where marching north to a somewhat cooler clime in search of some solace, albeit only temporary, from that blessed heat. This episode was called, "The Midnight Sun." It was written by Rod Serling and ran in 1961, during the third season of "The Twilight Zone." That was what I remembered last weekend as we lay prostrate upon the bed, sweat soaking the sheets, cursing the heat.... | |

According to the chairman of Russia's Olympic Committee, Leonid Tyagachev, the decision was not a sports question, but a political question. He pointed out the conflict in Chechnya as a major reason for Moscow's loss. Unfortunately, Tyagachev hasn't learnt his lessons yet. The Russian olympic boss, who is the ski coach of Putin and a frequent tamada (table chairman) at his family parties, is today involved in promoting Sochi for the winter Olympics in 2014. This idea is completely absurd - it's like planning to celebrate Olympic Games in Auschwitz or Treblinka. The Circassian people don't have the lobbying force of Jews or Armenians. Accordingly, the Genocide of the Circassians is almost a forgotten crime against humanity.... | |
